3rd Commandment

QUESTION?

Why don't Catholics worship God on Saturday as commanded in the 4th commandment by God? Your suppose to worship on Saturdays not Sundays.

ANSWER!

Incorrect, the 10 commandments are universal laws for Jews and non Jews. However, your confusion is with the 3rd commandment, it  reads: (Exodus 20:8-11): "Remember the sabbath day—keep it holy, Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God.f You shall not do any work, either you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your work animal, or the resident alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy."

We (Catholic Christians) are bound to worship God and we do. We worship God on Sundays the day of the resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We believe in a spiritual Sabbath which is Sunday, we are not bound by a legal Sabbath, only the Jews are. St Paul told us this: “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are only a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ” (Col 2:16-17).

What is he referring to by “These?”

He is referring to the Jerusalem temple, animal sacrifices, Jewish Priesthood, circumcision, ritual washings, legal Sabbath. In fact, to prove further that the legal Sabbath only applies to the Jews read this:

Exo 31:16  “Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the sabbath, observing the sabbath throughout their generations, as a perpetual covenant.”

Exo 31:17  “It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.”

God is clear, the Sabbath is for the Jews. Can you find a verse that says the Sabbath applies to gentiles (non-Jews)?

Did you know that the Jews were ordered to kill anyone who worked on the Sabbath? Read Exodus 35:2 “On six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be holy to you as the sabbath of complete rest to the LORD. Anyone who does work on that day shall be put to death.”

I hope you don’t follow that verse. Don’t worry, you don’t have too because your not a Jew under the law of Moses.

God Bless You,
