WHAT'S THE MORALITY ON KILLING ANIMALS?

March 29, 2024

QUESTION? / COMMENT!

Do you know what the church teaches regarding the above referenced? I have issues with putting down animals, and I am curious to know what is right and what is wrong with it?

ANSWER! / COMMENT!

Animals do not have an immortal soul; they are not made in God's image; they do not have the power to reason nor to love with charity. When an animal is suffering, we have them put down, because they cannot offer their sufferings in union with Jesus Christ to help redeem the world, and it would therefore be an act of cruelty to the animal to keep them suffering (cf., Catechism of the Catholic Church 2416). I include here a quote from St Thomas Aquinas, " Aquinas denied that animals are proper objects of moral concern for at least two reasons: '(1) God made animals exclusively for human use; we ride, wear, work, and eat animals, and "there is no sin in using a thing for the purpose for which it is" ("Summa"). (2) Animals cannot reason.'"

This link is to an answer I found on Catholic Answers website:  https://www.catholic.com/qa/is-it-morally-right-to-put-our-dog-to-sleep.   God gave man dominion over the animals

Human beings are able to unite their sufferings  with Jesus' and when they do so, their sufferings become redemptive and can be offered in reparation for sins.

 I hope this helps.
