What do orthodox faithful Catholic Exorcist believe about the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)SM?

August 27, 2025

A good Catholic e-mailed me asking whether there are parallels between God’s teachings and the field of psychiatry and psychology.

I responded that all TRUTH comes from good and you will glean some truth in Psychiatry, Psychology and Sociology, however, as Catholics we must proceed with caution. Psychiatry, in its late 20th and 21st century incarnations, has focused a great deal on defining the 300 or so disorders that populate the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV-TR) and matching medications (which often work) to each diagnosis.

The mental health system does not lean on Catholic anthropology, they lean on secular humanist such as Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, John Watson, Alfred Kinsey. By and large these men have turned the mental health system as a tool of the Devil.

Because this growing movement of psychology was and still is built upon a false anthropology, it is incapable of (1) identifying root problems and (2) providing effective solutions. But today, the fathers of modern psychology, as secular and illogical as  they were, would not have been able to even imagine the asinine propositions of 21st-century man. For example, the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), which is the bible for the mental health system, affirms both homosexuality and transgenderism. While these new affirmations are not surprising, they are key to understanding the godless and baseless foundation of the mental health system. A little over a half century ago, the DSM identified homosexuality and mere cross-dressing (transvestism) as mental disorders. In fact, the first edition of the DSM even called both of those disorders "pathologic behavior." I can only say, "Oh how the mighty have fallen" (2 Sam 1:27).

On top of normalizing homosexuality, the DSM — now in its fifth edition, as of 2013 — encourages children to castrate themselves as a way to cope with their so-called gender dysphoria. This is the manual providing not only all diagnoses, but all treatments for all so-called mental illnesses. Keep in mind, the DSM once identified mere cross-dressing as "pathologic behavior" DSM (c. 1952).

Psychiatry looks at us as pure matter, Catholicism looks at us as a body soul composite. The APA dictionary states that "because the existence of the soul has resisted empirical verification, science has generally ignored the concept." This is the entire foundation of the mental health system — but it's no surprise: The system has long been known to be a mere arm of the secular State. A true Christian does not look to the secular world for answers. What should come as a surprise is the huge number of Christians that choose to work within this system, somehow thinking they can wed Christianity with a soulless and godless psychology.

Not every contemporary profession is explicitly anti-Christian, but modern psychology is. Its bottom line, as you can see, is that the soul is a figment of the imagination. And the mental health system's rejection of the soul goes along with its rejection of the existence of God.
