What is the Difference between angels and archangels?
QUESTION?
What is the difference between angels and archangels?
ANSWER!
There are two ways to reckon angels which are not incompatible, just different ways to assess the biblical data about these mysterious beings. The first description of angels comes from traditional theology and speaks about the splendorous angels arrayed in a hierarchy of nine "choirs," each with its own particular mission and character. This reckoning explains the functions of the angels in the order of the universe and the plan of salvation. The second reckoning divides all the angels into just two categories: angels and archangels, with the latter being the more exalted and powerful of the two. If the "choirs" of angels are actually understood as "armies" commanded by "the Lord of Hosts," then the archangels are the various grades of officers and the angels are the non-commissioned officers and the rank and file soldiers.
In the angelic armies, there is perfect harmony in the ranks because they completely united in their duty to help man on his way to salvation. There is no jealousy of rank, authority, power or gifts. Rather, angels are humble and zealous beings, and each is content with his place and in his duty that God has given him for our good. Dante, in The Divine Comedy, expresses it perfectly when he says: "From seat to seat throughout this realm, to all the realm is pleasing. For in his will, our hearts have found their peace."
