SIGN OF PEACE AND JOKES AT MASS
QUESTION? / COMMENT!
If the Sign of Peace isn't being done during Mass because it takes our focus off God, then aren't jokes during homilies doing the same thing?
ANSWER! / COMMENT!
The official text from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) 65 outlines three specific expectations for the homilist:
Explication of Scripture/Texts: It must be an explanation of the scripture readings, or of a text from the Mass's Ordinary or Proper.
Contextual Application: It must relate to the mystery being celebrated and the specific, present-day needs of the congregation.
Liturgical Connection: It bridges the Liturgy of the Word with the Liturgy of the Eucharist, fostering an active faith response.
How they give their homily is not regulated by the Church, they can use satire, sarcasm, exaggeration, hyperbole and jokes (like Samson was fond of doing).
Of course it must be done with reverence, decorum and piety for God's Word.
