Mary & the Hebrew Scriptures
QUESTION?
Did Mary know her Hebrew Bible?
ANSWER!
Yes she sure did. Mary knew her Bible. First of all she was full of grace (Lk 1:28), next, the Holy Spirit and the power of God the Most High came upon her and overshadowed her (Lk 1:35). She prayed to God from the depths of her soul. Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Lk 1:46-47)…behold all generations will call me blessed (1:48)…And His Mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation(1:50)....He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers (1:54-55). This prayer that Mary prayed is a powerful echo of Hannah’s prayer the mother of Samuel the prophet (1 Sam 2:1-10). Mary was the first believer in the NT to speak about God’s Mercy. No wonder the Church calls her “Queen of Mercy.”
