CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY FIRST, BEFORE DEVOTIONAL READING

February 17, 2026

QUESTION? / COMMENT!

My Church has a Divine mercy group, we read Faustina’s Diary and also the Catechism and Scripture.
I have some problems with the diary. Seems to be a lot of emotionalism attention seeking. I have watched a few channels that criticize her and I sort of feel I need to step away from reading her diary. I focus more on reading scripture .
Also some ladies are deeply into Luisa Picaretta. She is also someone I most definitely do not feel comfortable with . I stay away from anything about Luisa.

I am quite strict in my walk with God the Father and keep my walk simple. These “extra,” things lead me to confusion and actually away from God.  Some of the women in these groups haven’t even read the Bible. But they read the diaries like they are scripture.
I came into the Church later in life. So I see things differently. I am on the outside looking in on these things. And am a bit troubled by it.

Seeking private wisdom and counsel on these things. I have spoken out against Luisa and caution with Faustina to some of my Catholic friends. I pray I have done the right thing.

ANSWER! / QUESTION?

CCC 133 The Church "forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful. . . to learn the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ, by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures.

CCC 125 ‘The Gospels are the heart of all the Scriptures "because they are our principal source for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Savior."’

CCC 132 "Therefore, the study of the sacred page should be the very soul of sacred theology. The ministry of the Word, too - pastoral preaching, catechetics and all forms of Christian instruction, among which the liturgical homily should hold pride of place - is healthily nourished and thrives in holiness through the Word of Scripture."

“All the troubles of the Church, all the evils in the world flow from this source that men do not by clear and sound knowledge and serious consideration penetrate into the truths of Sacred Scripture” (St. Teresa of Avila 1515-1582).

St Jerome (4th Century) “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

St. Louis de Montfort: "The teaching of Christ is greater than the advice of all the saints put together." The Divine Mercy is a good book, but you should read the Bible before you get into a devotional book. I would stay away from Luisa Picarrettas writings until the Church put the title: "Saint" before her name.
