Are spirits that linger in a house demonic or souls from purgatory?

QUESTION?

After we moved in we began hearing walking up and down the stairs. Doors opening and closing. We only had a few rooms furnished because the home was so large. I woke up one night down stairs laying in the middle of an empty room. I remember it being so cold. I ran upstairs to my parents room. I’ve never been a sleep walker. Other odd noises we heard such as banging in an old laundry chute. Come to find out many years before the husband axed the wife to death. Threw her head down laundry chute and shot him self in one of the rooms. That’s why the rent was so cheap.  We didn’t live there very long. Maybe a few months. My catholic aunt gave me a crucifix and I kept it with me all the time at night. I never was bothered after that. Would you say that the spirit haunting the place was demonic?  Or would it be a actual ghost?  Listening to your show has brought back the old memories. Thanks for the great show. 

ANSWER!

Houses where murders or suicides have taken place attract demons. This is called demonic infestation or poltergeist activity. The house must be blessed by a Catholic Priest in order to drive out the demons. Some Catholic Exorcist opine that the souls in purgatory can come back and retrace their steps. Also, demons are attracted to people who live in mortal sin, they will harass, annoy and vex them until they get in a right relationship with God and live in a state of grace.
